Holland Injury Law gains $2 million settlement in police shooting

On Behalf of | Dec 21, 2021 | Personal Injury

The team of attorneys at Holland Injury Law LLC of St. Louis has long been a champion of standing for justice and fairness as our clients can attest. In a high-profile case settled late last year, a female client shot in the back in 2019 by a Missouri police officer received a $2 million settlement.

The case recently received additional attention when in late November — more than two years after the shooting, prosecutors dropped a felony assault charge against the now-former police officer after she and the victim agreed to meet as part of a restorative justice mediation program.

Officer meant to use Taser

The shooting unfolded in April 2019 in the parking lot of a Ladue, Missouri, supermarket. Ladue is a western suburb of St. Louis.

Supermarket employees suspected the victim – Ashley Hall — and another person of shoplifting. When Hall ran away, the police officer Julia Crews shot her in the back. Crews later informed investigators that she meant to use her Taser and mistakenly drew her gun. She eventually resigned from the police department.

As a result of the shooting, Hall spent three weeks in the hospital with injuries that included multiple rib fractures, a lacerated stomach and a gunshot wound. In 2020, Hall filed a federal lawsuit against Crews and the city of Ladue, citing unreasonable and excessive force in the shooting. The $2 million settlement in the case was reached in October 2020.

Sadly, similar cases continue to occur throughout the country.
